The ship

A sailing ship with room for your whole crew

“Chateauroux” is a large sailing ship from 1908 — a two-mast klipperaak that carried sand, peat, scrap iron and cement along Dutch, Belgian and German waterways for nearly seventy years. Restored and converted in 1986, she can now sail 42 day guests and offers 26 beds across ten sleeping cabins: ideal for larger groups, families and teams.

A large common room, a fully equipped kitchen and two bathrooms make her yours for meals, leisure or happenings. Clean bedding and towels are available for every guest.

Frequently asked

Good to know

Times, deposit, parking, house rules — the practical side of a night aboard, answered the way we'd answer on the phone.

Still wondering about something? Email ahoy@chateauroux.nl.

On board
How many guests can stay aboard?

Up to 26 guests sleeping across ten cabins, and 42 guests for day trips.

Is there crew on board?

Yes — a skipper, and a mate when we sail. Both live aboard in their own quarters, with their own entrance.

Are bedding and towels provided?

We can provide clean bedding and a towel per person. This is only included in weekend stays. On other sailing bookings, bedding is €15.00 per person and towels €5.00 per person.

What about food and drinks?

You are free to bring any food and drink, and to use the fridge, the drinks cooler, the storage space and the kitchen to prepare your meals. We cater on request only, so let us know in good time if you would like catering on board.

Can electronic devices be charged on board?

In harbour, yes. Under way the sockets in the cabins are switched off; without the generator running there is still power for cooking and for the equipment the ship needs. We can start the generator on request if more devices need power.

Is there internet on board?

There is a mobile internet aerial in the mast and Wi-Fi points throughout the ship. We are normally within reach of a mobile signal, but we cannot promise reception everywhere we sail.

Is there heating on board?

Yes. The common room and the kitchen have underfloor heating, and the bathrooms and cabins each have a radiator of their own. The cabins right aft have no radiator and stay cooler.

Is the ship accessible?

The ship has railings throughout, to keep you safe and to hold on to. There is a gangway to come aboard, but she is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Contact us if you have any questions about accessibility or safety.

Can the boat be locked?

The ship locks from the outside, so the whole boat is secure while you're out. Individual cabins cannot be locked: for safety and regulatory reasons every cabin must stay accessible.

Are pets allowed?

Yes — provided you tell us in good time so we can discuss it, pets are welcome aboard, in the spaces set aside for them.

Sailing
Do I need to help sail the ship?

Yes! If you want to go sailing, the ship needs you to become part of the crew. A minimum of four people is needed to be able to sail. Don't worry — the skipper and mate will tell you what to do. And of course you can rotate within the group, or assign some who help on deck and others who relax, or who cook a good dinner for the ones who did.

What if there is no wind, or too much?

If we can sail, we sail. With too little wind we cover less distance and the engine can lend a hand. With genuinely too much wind we may stay alongside until it eases, or make the passage under engine. From wind force 6 the skipper decides on the day, on the conditions and on how ready the guest crew is.

Where do we sail to?

We can never say in advance where we will sail; that depends on the wind and the conditions of the day. What is certain is that there are so many fine places out here that there is something to discover in every direction — east, west, north or south.

Do I need sailing clothes?

You do not need proper sailing gear. Bring it if you have it; if you don't, that is fine too. What matters is layers — a shirt, a jumper or fleece, a jacket and a raincoat — and a change of clothes. And decent shoes: no flip-flops, no heels.

Getting there
What are check-in and checkout times?

Check-in from 20:00 (8 pm), checkout before 11:00 (11 am). Arriving early? Depending on where the ship lies and whether she is already moored, we can sometimes take luggage early, and sometimes an earlier check-in is possible too. Ask us in good time by email.

Where can we park?

Monnickendam — you can park right in front of the ship for up to 2 hours. For longer stays, park for free at Galgeriet, a 5-minute walk from the quay.

Amsterdam — there is a public car park under the Pontsteiger building, entrance at Revaleiland, open around the clock at about €6 an hour or €35–40 a day. Spaces are limited, so book ahead through ParkBee or Mobypark. Street parking in the Houthavens is paid, scarce and expensive. The cheapest way is P+R Sloterdijk (Piarcoplein 1): park there and take the train to Central Station and bus 48, about 25 minutes door to door.

Enkhuizen — about an hour from Amsterdam by the A8 and A7. You may drive onto the Gependam to drop off passengers and luggage, but you cannot park on the dam itself. Park for free at the Dirck Chinaplein right beside the ship, or on the free car park behind the station — both a short walk away.

How do we get there by public transport?

Monnickendam — from Central Station walk to Amsterdam Central Bus Station, platform A, and take bus 314 or 316 towards Volendam/Edam/Hoorn to Monnickendam, Bernhardbrug — about 18 minutes. From the stop it is a 12-minute walk through the old town to the historic harbour.

Amsterdam — from Central Station, leave on the IJ side and walk to the bus station. Take bus 48 towards Houthavens and get off at Pontsteiger: about 6 minutes, with a bus every 15 minutes. Tram 3 to its terminus at Zoutkeetsgracht is an alternative, followed by a 10-minute walk around the Houthaven. It is also a 25-minute walk or an 8-minute cycle along the Westerdoksdijk and Houtmankade. From Amsterdam Noord, the free IJ ferries from Distelweg and the NDSM wharf land at the Pontsteiger.

Enkhuizen — take the direct intercity from Amsterdam Central to Enkhuizen. Enkhuizen is the end of the line, so you cannot miss your stop: about an hour, with two trains an hour. From the station it is a 5-minute walk, towards the harbour and then along the quay to the Dirck Chinaplein. We lie at the Gependam, the pier alongside it.

You check in with a contactless bank card or an OV-chipkaart; in Amsterdam the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket is valid too.

Booking
What are the cancellation conditions?

For a booking made directly with us: 50% of the reservation up to one week before, excluding reservation costs. Inside that last week there is no refund.

What is the deposit?

€300, paid in cash on arrival, and we hand it back before you leave. Other arrangements are possible — contact us in that case.

Safety and rules
What are the house rules?

After 22:00, sound stays inside the ship — no noise on deck or on land.

Smoking is on deck only, never inside the ship.

Nothing goes down the toilets or the sinks that is not biodegradable. Tampons and wet wipes — including the ones that say they can go in the toilet — must never go in: the waste water pump clogs, and that is a problem nobody wants aboard.

And please take care of our beloved lady. We have put a great deal of time into keeping this beauty afloat, and we hope you will help us keep her that way.

Is there first aid on board?

Yes. There is an AED by the day saloon and a first aid kit aboard.

Are there life jackets on board?

Yes. Adults can have a life jacket from us if they want one, and children are required to wear one on deck.
